What is Vaastu?

“Vaastu Shastra” the vedic architecture integrates the science of Ayurveda and Astrology by linking them with human lives. “Vaastu” Combines the earth’s magnetic fields, the influence of planets and other celestial bodies along with cosmic rays and plays a vital role in happy family life and prosperity of business.
Vaastu Shilpa shastra, the ancient mystic science and art of designing and construction of buildings finds its origin Staptya Veda which in turn is part of Atharva Veda, one of the four vedas.
In today’s age & time with growing urbanisation, paucity of space and more significantly the rampant sense of faithlessness in anything that modern science fails to explain, it is practically impossible to even dream of a home or office confirming to the laws of “Vaastu”.

Vaastu the Bond of 5 Elements (Panchbhuutas)
Sky

Aakaash - It is the unending (Anantha) regions remote from the Earth, in which not only our Solar System but the entire Galaxy (Brahmaan) exists. It’s effective forces are light, heat, gravitational force and waves, magnetic field and others. Its main chactreistic is Shabda (Sound).
Air

Vaayu - Atmosphere of the Earth which is about 400 kms, in depth and consists of 21% Oxygen (Praan Vaayu), Nitrogen 78%, Carbon-di-Oxide, Helium, other kinds of gases, dust particles, humidity and vapor in certain proportion. Life of Human beings, plants and animals and even fire depends on this. Its main characteristics are Shabda and Sparsha (Sound).
Fire

Agni - Represents light and heat of  fire (burning), lightning, volcanic or plutonic heat, the heat of fever or inflammation, energy, days and nights, seasons and such other aspects of Solar system, and also enthusiasm, ardor, passion, spirited vigor. It’s main characteristics are Shabda, Sparsha and Roopa (form).
Water

Jala - This is represented by rain, river, sea and is in the form of liquid, solid ice), and gas steam, cloud). It is a combination of hydrogen and oxygen in the ratio of two to one, perfectly neutral in reaction. In every plant and life on Earth water exists in certain proportion and its main characteristics are Shabda, Sparsha, Roopa and Rasa (taste)
Earth

Bhuumi - Earth the third planet in order form the Sun, is a big magnet with north an south poles as centers of attractions. Its magnetic field and gravitational force has telling effects on everything on Earth whether living or non-living. It is tilted by about 23½° at the meridian of its either side for six months called Uttaraayana and Dakshinaayana and rotates on its own axis from West to East resulting in day and night. Its one orbit around sun takes 365 ¼ days           (1- year) Three fourths of Earth’s surface is water and one fourth is land. Its main characteristics are Shabda, Sparsha, Roopa, Rasa, and Guna (quality).

Vaastu Science

Vaastu believes that there are essentially two types of forces which are equally and opposites in nature. The interaction of these two forces is cosmic ordained and produces a third type of force which is called ‘bioforce’ or ‘prana’ needed for life to exist. One type of force is subtle and fine. The other is dark and dense. We can ,for sake of understanding this subject, call the first one as ‘positive’ and the other as ‘negative’. ‘prana’is liberated by the interaction of these forces

Over the surface of the globe these forces continuously interact releasing bio-energy. When a structure is built over the surface of the earth it comes in the way of a natural interaction. Both the forces enter the structure where the interaction continues. However, the intensity of forces that enter the structure need not be the same. Depending on various factors like levels, water bodies, door placement etc., either the positive or the negative can have stronger presence.

If the structure is so designed that the positive forces override the negative forces then there is a beneficial release of bio-energy which helps all the inmates to be healthy. Even after such reaction with the negative forces a positive cosmic surplus is always present in such a structure which is the Supreme Being Himself. In such an atmosphere life is smooth and happy with every thing in life coming your way without any great struggle. It is a happy and healthy life for all the inhabitants.

If on the other hand the structure is built in such a manner that the negative forces override the positive then you have a weak bio-energy field which manifests as diseases in the occupants. The over bearing negative field makes your actions, efforts, thinking negative so that ultimately the whole life is ruined.

The science of Vaastu guides you as to the rules you have to follow so that the structure has a positive atmosphere.

Vaastu Compass

Vaargu (Etymology)

The concept of Vaargu ( Etymology) in Vaastu has also become redundant, with the passage of time, because of tits orientation towards royal palaces and  mansions. The life of the oriental man was governed by chantings composed of letters of the alphabet. But in course of time, the importance of chantings was superceded by scientific tempeer. and rational outlook.
Elephantine
Donkey     PA     YA     SHA     Crow
Taurus     THA         AA     Soverign
Dog     TA     CHA     KA     Smoke
Leo

The concept  of Etymology in oriental Vaastu had classified the consonants in Telegu alphabets into five divisions and consideredthe first letters in all the five divisions KA, CHA, TA, THA, PA for the purpose of arriving at Aayam.Furhter three more divisions viz, YA, SHA and AA are added and a method for finding Aayam has been given.

How to select a site for construction

It is always better to consult an expert on Vaasthu before selecting a site for the construction of a house to reap the best advantages out of the proposed house. It is always advisable to go in for a site which is either a square or a rectangle in shape. A spacious site makes the inhabitant rich provided it is a perfect square or a rectangle. It should not be cut off in any direction.

It is advisable to acquire an additional site located towards to east or north of the existing house. Any amount of investment for acquiring a plot situated towards the northeastern part of the existing plot, is not a bad investment. The topography of the plot reflects on the life of the inhabitant. Slope towards north or east showers bountiful blessings on the inhabitant. Similarly elevation in land in the western and in southern part of the site makes the life a prosperous one. People residing in such sites do achieve greater things. It is always better to select a spacious plot so as to facilitate construction of as many floors as one can.

A plot located at the confluence of two roads leading to east and north respectively, straight without turns makes the life of the resident a pleasant one.

If the plot is situated in conformity with the compass the house constructed, thereon also would be set as per compass. However any deliberate attempt to adjust the house as per compass, leads to directional dead-lock, because it result in extension of southeast, southwest and northwest. Hence if a site does not fall in line with compass, the house can be constructed consistent with the adjoining road and the neighboring housed. That is why a site possessing a straight and parallel road according to the compass must be preferred. However, a plot lying by the side of a road leading on increasing northeast, is said to lead the density of the occupant for a brighter tomorrow. The prosperity and progress in the life of the resident of a plot is directly proportional to the elevation of the western and southern parts of his plot.

One should never select a triangular site. Just as, it is difficult to change the properties of the soil it is also difficult to change the properties of a site or a plot is directly proportional to the elevation of the western and southern part of his plot. One should never select a triangular site. Just as, it is difficult to change the properties of the soil it is also difficult to change the properties of a site or a plot as one can’t change a silk into cotton or vice versa. For instance, the existence of a high hillock in north east of
the location of a tank or a river in west or south cannot be rectified. Similarly, one cannot change the direction of a road, which cuts across the northeastern tip of a plot. Further the existence of a small plot in between two bigger plots, makes the inhabitant lead a suffocating life just as calf gets trampled between two fighting life just as a calf gets trampled between tow fighting bulls.

Never select a site which protrudes towards northwest, southwest or southeast. If the vacant portion in a site is more towards south or west than towards north or east, it is advisable to separate the excess portion by means of a small wall or fence and construct a shed or the same may be disposed off.

If the road leading from your plot takes you towards east, north or northeast it is said to be a very auspicious one. If that road leads you towards southeast or southwest it brings misfortunes to the inhabitant.

Never think of procuring a site which slopes towards southwest. Ensure that the rain water or sewage water of neighboring plots does not flow into your site from eastern or northeastern direction. People living in such houses cannot have normal peaceful lives.

It is a well - known fact that even a single step taken in haste by the pawn will end the pay with helpless Shah and utter flap. In the same way a small error crept in the many troubles in future. So also the contraction or projection of directions, if not considered first, will end in chaos.

In chess the looser will be a single person. But in Vaasthu, a game of directions, if the error is not checked and rectified in the beginning itself; it will bounce troubles on the whole household. Hence one should be cautious enough in selecting the site as per Vaasthu to avoid future misfortune, lest he will become “Burnt Child”.

Directive Principles of Vaastu Shastra

First of all the direction and shape of the plot has to be considered well. A construction on quadrangular, rectangular or square plot is beneficial and good from all aspects.

Big plot fetches prosperity, but is should not be having cleavage or cracks any where.

Triangular shaped plot should not be selected for constructing a building. It is inauspicious.

A small narrow plot in between two big plots is also not good, because owner of the building on such plot always remains in troubles.

If the length of the plot in east-west direction is more than in north-south direction, it is better.

If there is more open vacant space in south than in north, it will lead to destruction and downfall whether it is in the house or a industry, or in a temple or a hut.

It is auspicious if there is more open space in the east than in
the west; and more open space in the north or than in the south.

All the heavy and permanent items should be placed in the south-west corner of the building or plot.

While sleeping head, should be kept in the east or south. Never sleep with feet towards should or east.

Water tanks on the roof in the south-west direction are auspicious. These should never be placed in the north-east (esshanya) corner.

Pooja room is always best in the north-east corner or near it.

Kitchen is always auspicious and best in the south-east (Agency) corner or adjacent to it.

Open space should be kept all around the building.

Building should be constructed such that it is higher in the south-west and lower in the north-east. Walls should be also be made in this manner.

Underground water tank (for storage water) well, hand-pump, boring etc. Should be built in unit in north-east direction only. Height of these water bodies forth should never be above the plinth level of the main Building.

As far as possible there should be only one main door of the house, which should be adorned with auspicious symbols.

All the doors and windows should be of the same height their upper edges being in the same straight line.

There should not be a door above a door. This principle does not apply multi-story buildings. Height of the door on upper floor should be kept less than that on the lower floor.

Family life will be more and more happy if more heavy items are placed in the rooms on the south-west and south sides.

The more lighter (weightless) items are there in the north, north-east and north-west directions, the more happier will be the life of the family in the house.

It is better if there are no tall trees in the east. Trees in the west are good.

In the same line, the plot having road on the east-north directions is better to be selected.

‘Garbh’ means the space or width in between two walls.

The essence of Vaastu Shastra is actually to make the house in total conformity with the utilisation of five basic materials, viz, earth, water, air, fire, space. Therefore it is necessary to build the specified rooms for specific functions in the directions or places determined for the same. For example, south-east corner is best for fire (kitchen etc.), North-west direction for attaining the bliss of divine
favor.

Specially, while constructing a house due care is to be taken regarding position of doors, windows, Chulha (fire, burner), well, bath room, bed room, toilet (latrine) and these should be constructed in the
places allotted as per Vasty principles.

If there is a well or any other pit in the south-east, south-west or north-west direction, there will always be quarrels in the family and there will be no peace.

West portion of the land should be raised and there should be slope towards the east, which is auspicious.

Four sided (square) shaped plot of land is considered to be the best as per Vaastu Shastra. All the architects (Vaastu Shastries) have this opinion.

Elmira’s, Sofa Set, Table and other heavy items which can be placed permanently at a place, are auspicious if placed in the South-West corner or near it in the west.

A temple can have doors on all the four sides.

Divide the length of the wall, on the side in which main door is to be kept, in nine equal parts; then leaving 5 parts on the right and 3 parts on the left, door should be constructed in the remaining on apart or in the 7th part.

Door should be constructed in the portion as shown in the diagram given in the chapter on doors directions should be taken as it when coming out of the house.

If living in a newly built house is stated without worshipping Vaastu, Several troubles and difficulties arise in the family. Therefore Vaastu Poojan is a must.

For interior decoration of the house, pictures and scenes of war and battles, idols/statues of demons, pictures of pig(boar), leopard, tiger, jackal, serpent, eagle, owl, pigeon, hawk, crow, crane etc. are not auspicious. These should not be put on the walls in the house for decoration.

Flow of water and its outlet in the directions other than east, north-west, north-east and north is inauspicious and causes troubles.

Toilet (Latrine) is auspicious if constructed in north-west corner. If necessary or in case of lack of space it may constructed in any direction, but the seat in the toilet should be such that when using the toilet one should face towards south or north only.

Only new wood should be used in construction of a new house. Old wood used earlier if used again in the new house, it is inauspicious and must be avoided.

If only one kind of wood is used throughout in the construction of a house, there remain no default relating to Vaastu. At the most two or three types of wood may be used.

It is not auspicious to construct any thing towards the south or west of the Vaastu zone. Construction should be done towards north and east of this zone.

If extension is to be made, it should be extended in all the sides. Extension only in one side is not auspicious.

Door of the stair-case should face either east or south. It well be auspicious if the stairs are constructed in the west or south on the right side.

If the earth (soil) on the land is excavated and removed, and fresh pure earth from elsewhere is filled in it. there remain no defect of Shalya in the land.

Shadow of trees falling on the building in the duration 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. is inauspicious and causes troubles.

TV. Radio or any other such device for entertainment should be placed near the south west corner.

If more than one door are required, doors should be constructed in the positions as suggested in the Vaastu Shastra, but no two doors be opposite each other.

Guest room or drawing room should be in the north or west direction.

Room for the watchman or guard should be built near the gate in the boundary wall on the left side. His quarter should be on the left side of the gate.

PLOTS

FACING DIFFERENT ROADS :

PLOTS WITH FOUR ROADS : Plots  with  four  roads in four directions   without  any  Veedhi Shoola  (Spearing  road) are supposed to be the best  which  will give  health, wealth name, fame and all-round prosperity.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Vaastu linked to any religion?
No. It is science of structures and religion does not come in to the picture.
What are the effects on a tenant?

The question of ownership does not arise. Whoever occupies and stays in the building is the recipient of the effect.
Is astrology a part of Vaastu?

No. Efforts are made here and there to include the astrological aspects of the owner. This can only make the subject a pseudo science. Further the question of ownership itself may be ticklish to determine in cases of properties owned by more than one individual. The best benefit of Vaastu will be available to the entire if it is treated only as a science of structures.
How do we know if we living in a Vaastu defective building?

Easy! If you are facing inexplicable problems which are normally not expected then you should suspect Vaastu.
Should one correct all defects? It may not be possible and expensive too?

Not necessary. Only prominent defects need to be corrected so that the energy flow changes for the better. The other defects can remain. If on the overall a structure has a positive presence it will give good effect notwithstanding a few mistakes here and there.
What are the guide lines for Industries, offices, commercial establishments etc?

Basically the same. Build the structure so as to have a positive atmosphere inside. The principles remain the same as those for residential buildings.
When is the best time to adopt Vaastu?

While selecting plots and while the design of the house is still on the drawing board. At this time it is very easy to incorporate all Vaastu norms with out sacrificing aesthetics, comforts or economy of construction.
Is not the natural topography the best?

Unfortunately no. Nature does not seem to have designed any thing keeping the comfort of the human organism. On the other hand it is the organism which modifies itself to suit nature. Vaastu is one such modification that is necessary when levels are considered.
