Dow ends with a staggering 733-point loss as retailers report biggest drop in sales in 3 years
The economy lurched deeper into the doldrums Wednesday and took the stock market down with it, sending the Dow Jones industrials to a staggering 733-point loss and erasing any hopes that the convulsions that have shaken Wall Street for a month were over.
The daylong sell-off came as retailers reported the biggest drop in sales in three years and as a Federal Reserve snapshot showed Americans are spending less and manufacturing is slowing around the country.

US stocks extend huge losses over credit concerns
Wall Street extends huge losses as markets globally sell off over frozen credit markets
NEW YORK (AP) — Wall Street extended its devastating losses Friday, but prices swung sharply as investors scooped up shares decimated by more than a week of intense and panicked selling. The Dow Jones industrials, down nearly 700 points in the opening minutes of trading, recovered to a loss of just over 200, and the other major indexes fluctuated as well.
